I worked as part of the SMARTmove project, which aims to produce a system for rehabilitating the upper limbs of patients with stroke using functional electrical stimulation.

My key responsibilities included:

  • implementing and maintaining iterative learning control algorithms in C++ on real-time Linux platforms;
  • writing C#/XAML code to produce an attractive GUI;
  • designing processes and algorithms to evaluate patient performance using data from a Microsoft Kinect sensor;

PhD Particle Physics - Lattice QCD - University of Southampton

I conducted research as part of the high energy physics research group in the department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton. Specifically, I worked on lattice QCD in a team of about a dozen people, simulating particle physics interactions to come up with observables to compare with experiments. MEng Chemical Engineering - University of Birmgingham

Chemical engineering is primarily about manufacturing chemicals on an industrial scale in a safe and economical manner. This degree therefore contained the fundamentals of process design, such as:

  • mass, heat and momentum transport,
  • thermodynamics,
  • reactor design,
  • binary distillation,
  • heat exchangers and heat integration,
  • other unit operations such as liquid-liquid extraction, membrane filtration and crystallisation.

As well as this, there were also topics of a professional and economic nature, such as:

  • calculation of plant and process capital and operating costs,

BSc Open Degree - Open University

Over two years I undertook four level 3 modules with the Open University in physics and mathematics in the following four subjects:

Combined, the modules were equivalent to the third year of an undergraduate physics degree, and I had to use my time management skills very effectively to fit the extra 16 hours of weekly study around my work at Mott MacDonald and my existing university work. I used existing credit from my first two years at the University of Birmingham to create an Open University Open Degree.

Condensed Matter Summer Research Student - University of Birmgingham

During the summer of 2011 I worked as a research student in the University of Birmingham's Condensed Matter Research Department. The work involved modelling the interaction of neutrons with magnetic fields to aid in the design of electromagnets to separate neutrons according to their wavelength. My primary responsibilities were:

  • writing and testing simulation code;
  • considering possible approaches to the problem;
  • liaising with research staff to discuss new approaches and results.
